Limousin Cattle DNA Testing
Boost the genetic merit of your Limousin herd with genomic testing. Make breeding and bloodstock decisions based upon verified genetic data.
Understanding Limousin Genetics
The Limousin breed originated in central France where seasonal variation can be quite severe, resulting in a versatile beast that performs in a variety of conditions.
The Limousin herd book was established in 1886 and the breed can now be found around the world, from the northern-most herds of Finland and the Commonwealth of Soviet States to countries such as Cuba, South Africa and China and of course Australia.
DNA test results go beyond visual observations, allowing you to fine-tune your breeding program to secure your farm’s future. Undertaking a genetic evaluation of your herd with XytoVet unlocks valuable, data-backed insights that you can use to drive profitability, productivity and sustainability.
XytoVet is Australia’s only locally-owned livestock genotyping service provider. We’re heavily embedded in the Australian agricultural industry and are passionate about working together with Australian farmers to strategically drive improvement.

Limousin Genomic Testing Services
Genotyping
XytoVet uses a custom Affymetrix Axiom Bovine Genotyping Array enabling farmers to compare and select for cattle based on key genetic merit, including horn/poll status and numerous genetic conditions.
Parentage Testing
Accurate parentage is critical to rapid genetic gain. XytoVet can use all the SNPs required by the Limousin Society to verify parentage as well as the full standard ISAG panel. You can then use this verified genetic data to make informed breeding decisions that drive genetic gain.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why should I use DNA testing for my herd?
DNA analysis enables you to predict an animal’s genetic potential over the course of its life. It’s also the only tool for precise parent verification. By gaining an in-depth understanding of each animal’s key traits, Limousin producers can make data-backed breeding decisions that drive herd productivity and financial returns.
XytoVet offers a full 50K genomic test for beef cattle that is fully verified by AGBU/Breedplan.
Do you have specific goals you want to achieve with your DNA results? We can customise our testing to target the traits that matter most to your operations.

What kinds of genetic conditions are tested for in Limousin herds?
- Bovine Congenital Erythropoietic Protoporphyria (BCEPP)
- Horn/Poll
- Myostatin
- Tenderness
- Coat Colour
- BVDV (Pesti)

How do I get started with DNA tests?
For DNA testing, XytoVet recommends collecting tissue samples. This involves taking a small tissue punch from the animal’s ear using an applicator and a tissue sampling unit (TSU), which can be sourced from our recommended supplier. For further details, watch our instructional video or contact our Genetic Sales Consultants for assistance – we’re here to help with any questions you may have along the way.

Can I use my current Limousin breed society?
Despite being a major contributor of genotypes to Sheep Genetics and DataGene, many Australian cattle societies do not currently allow the only Australian-owned and operated livestock DNA service provider to supply genotypes. You can change this by asking Liomousin Australia to accept XytoVet data, which is compatible with, and already validated by Helical, IGS and AGBU.
