Angus Cattle DNA Testing
Improve your Angus breeding program with genotyping. Identify and boost desirable characteristics that elevate meat production and quality through the use of DNA data.
Understanding Angus Genetics
Angus cattle are amongst the most popular beef breeds globally, producing meat that’s revered for its marbling, tenderness and flavour. These animals are highly adaptable to different environments and thrive in cooler climates because of their thick black or red coats.
DNA analysis looks beyond animal phenotype to reveal the underlying genetic profile of your Angus cattle. At XytoVet, our genotyping services equip you with valuable genetic insights that you can use to strategically drive herd improvement through fine-tuned breeding programs.
As Australia’s only locally-owned livestock genotyping service provider, we’re passionate about working together with Australian farmers to boost your herd’s performance. Secure a strong future for your farm with XytoVet.

Angus Cattle Genetic Testing Services
Genotyping
At XytoVet, we use a custom Affymetrix Axiom Bovine Genotyping Array. The array is an innovative tool that facilitates parent verification and trait selection of Angus cattle.
Parentage Testing
Accurate DNA-informed parentage is the basis of all genetic gain. We use multiple genetic markers to confirm the true parentage of your Angus offspring, both dam and sire, giving you the confidence that you have full oversight over your herd’s genetic lineage.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why should I test my Angus Cattle's DNA?
DNA analysis is the only tool for precise parent verification and helps predict an animal’s genetic potential over the course of its life. By understanding each animal’s economically important traits, Angus producers can make informed breeding decisions that maximise animal productivity.
XytoVet provides a comprehensive 50K genomic test for Angus beef cattle, fully verified by International Genetic Solutions (IGS). XytoVet can also customise testing to focus on genetic markers relevant to your business goals.

What kinds of recessive genetic conditions are tested for in Angus cattle?
- Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM)
- Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH)
- Contractual Arachnodactyly (CA)
- Development Duplications (DD)
- Dwarfism (PRKG2-related)
- Alpha Mannosidosis (MA)
- Oculocutaneous Hypopigmentation (OH)
- Osteopetrosis (OS)
- Myostatin (NT821)

How do I get started?
For DNA analysis, XytoVet recommends collecting a tissue sample. This involves taking a small tissue punch from the animal’s ear using an applicator and a tissue sampling unit (TSU). These can be sourced from our recommended supplier. For further details, watch our instructional video or contact our Genetic Sales Consultants for assistance – we’re always happy to help.

Can I use my current breed society?
Despite being a major contributor of genotypes to Sheep Genetics and DataGene, many Australian cattle societies do not currently allow the only Australian-owned and operated livestock DNA service provider to supply genotypes. You can change this by asking Angus Australia to accept XytoVet data, which is compatible with, and already validated by Helical, IGS and AGBU.
