What is a Flock Profile?

Livestock Genotyping and DNA Analysis

In today’s competitive livestock industry, understanding the genetic strengths and weaknesses of your flock is more important than ever. A Flock Profile offers Merino producers a simple, efficient way to uncover the genetic story behind their flock, without the need to individually test every animal.

By providing a benchmark of the genetic merit of your flock, this test helps you make better informed breeding decisions, optimise productivity, and improve long-term flock performance.

What is the Flock Profile tool?

A Flock Profile is a genomic analysis performed by Sheep Genetics Australia using XytoVet’s  genomic data. The Flock Profile test is designed to estimate the genetic merit of a Merino flock by analysing a representative group of, typically, ewes. Instead of genotyping each animal, the test uses a randomly sampled subset of a particular age cohort, to create an accurate genetic profile of the entire flock.

What sets the Flock Profile tool apart is its ability to deliver flock level insights rather than individual animal results, using genomic technology to benchmark your flock against industry averages. It provides a cost effective way for commercial producers to understand their genetic position and uncover improvement opportunities that will not be apparent through visual assessment alone.

A Flock Profile report provides a producer with information about:

  • Genetic performance relative to industry benchmarks
  • Key production traits such as growth, fertility, wool quality, and disease resistance
  • The influence of sires used over time
  • Whether your flock is progressing, plateauing, or falling behind genetically
  • Opportunities to align your flock with breeding objectives

These insights help producers make confident, data-driven decisions that drive measurable improvement.

How to use Flock Profile

Conducting a Flock Profile test

The process for conducting a Flock Profile test is designed to be straightforward.

  1. Select a representative sample: 20 randomly chosen animals from the same year drop.
  2. Collect DNA samples: usually via Allflex TSU (tissue sampling units).
  3. Submit samples for genomic analysis: send the samples to XytoVet where DNA is extracted and genotyped
  4. Sheep Genetics Australia: Genotypes are uploaded to Sheep Genetics and compared against the national Merino database.
  5. Receive a comprehensive genetic report: outlines your flock’s benchmarked performance across key traits.

XytoVet supports producers through every step of the process. We can assist with providing TSU kits and instructions and ensuring samples are collected, labelled, and shipped correctly. Our Client Services team will ensure that your samples are promptly processed, and the data is sent to Sheep Genetics in a timely manner, allowing us to meet the analysis deadlines. We will also notify you once the results become available.

Understanding the Flock Profile report

The Flock Profile report presents your flock’s genetic benchmarks relative to the national Merino or terminal sire population. You’ll typically see results for traits including:

  • Weaning and post-weaning weight
  • Reproduction (e.g., number of lambs weaned)
  • Carcase attributes
  • Wool traits (fibre diameter, staple length, staple strength)
  • Health and resilience indicators
  • Overall index values showing where your flock sits in the industry

Results are typically displayed as percentile bands or index values, making it easy to identify where your flock excels and where opportunities for improvement lie.

Using the Flock Profile results

A Flock Profile report goes beyond a simple snapshot and serves as a practical decision making tool. Producers can use the insights to:

  • Refine breeding strategies: Identify strengths to amplify and weaknesses to correctly choose rams whose genetics will drive key traits in alignment with the breeding objectives of your enterprise.
  • Guide purchasing decisions: Ensure ram selections deliver targeted genetic gains and compare potential ram sources using objective data.
  • Track long-term progress: Measure genetic change over time and check whether previous ram purchases are delivering results
  • Manage flock structure: Understand the genetic distribution across age groups and identify whether certain cohorts are outperforming others

The Flock Profile report can be used to guide targeted improvements across the flock, such as lifting fleece value by refining fibre diameter and staple strength, boosting reproductive performance to increase lamb turnoff, and strengthening growth traits to support faster weight gain. It also helps producers build greater disease resilience, supporting long term flock health and productivity.
